The Part of Your House Nobody Looks Up At

Gutters are easy to ignore because when they're working, they're invisible — water goes where it's supposed to and nobody thinks about it again. The problem only becomes obvious once it's already been failing quietly for a while.

By the time you can see the damage — damp patches, staining on render, moss creeping up brickwork — the gutter's usually been sending water down your wall instead of away from it for months, not days.

Mr Roofing repairs and replaces gutters and downpipes across Dublin — cast iron, uPVC, and aluminium systems, on period homes and new builds alike. Free inspection, 25-year guarantee, and we'll tell you honestly whether a repair holds or the system's genuinely due for replacement.

Guttering Issues We Actually Fix

Blocked Gutters & Downpipes

Leaves, moss, and general debris built up to the point water's got nowhere to go. Cleared properly, checked for damage while we're up there.

Sagging & Pulling-Away Gutters

A gutter that's dropped below its proper line or pulled away from the fascia — usually a sign of what's inside it, not just the bracket.

Leaking Joints & Seals

Where gutter sections meet is the most common failure point on any system, old or new. Resealed or replaced properly, not just caulked over.

Cracked or Split Guttering

UV, frost, and age cracking the gutter itself. We repair sections where possible, replace where it's genuinely gone.

Cast Iron Gutter Repairs & Restoration

Original cast iron on period Dublin homes — repaired, repainted, and re-hung rather than automatically ripped out and replaced with uPVC.

Downpipe Repairs & Replacement

Cracked, disconnected, or misaligned downpipes sending water straight down your wall instead of into the drain where it belongs.

What Gutter Repairs Cost In Dublin

Every system's different, and material makes a real difference here — cast iron repair and repainting is a different job to a uPVC section swap.

Clearing and minor repairs — a blockage clear, a resealed joint, a small section fix — usually the most affordable job, often done in one visit.

Bracket and realignment work — re-hanging a sagging gutter to the correct fall, replacing failed brackets — depends on how much of the run needs correcting.

Cast iron restoration — repainting and repair of original systems, priced on condition and how much rust has taken hold.

Full gutter or downpipe replacement — driven by material choice (uPVC, aluminium, or cast iron) and the length of run being replaced.

Free inspection. Itemised quote. No guessing over the phone.

Why Dublin Gutters Actually Fail

A full gutter is heavier than most people imagine — and that weight does the real damage.

Water alone is heavy. Water plus years of trapped leaves, moss, and silt is heavier again. A gutter carrying that load for long enough starts pulling its brackets away from the fascia board, which changes the angle the gutter sits at — and once the angle's wrong, water stops running to the downpipe and starts finding the lowest point instead, which is usually straight over the front edge, onto the wall below. This is why a gutter that's "always been a bit sketchy" tends to get suddenly, dramatically worse rather than failing gradually.

Cast iron and uPVC are not the same problem, and they don't get the same repair.

A huge amount of Dublin's older housing — Victorian and Edwardian terraces especially — still has original cast iron guttering, and it behaves very differently from the uPVC most modern gutter companies are set up to work with. Cast iron can genuinely last a century or more, but it needs repainting periodically to stop rust taking hold, and once rust does start, it eats through from the inside, meaning a section can look solid and still be a season or two from failing. Replacing period cast iron with uPVC isn't always the right call either — on a period property it can look wrong and isn't always necessary if the original system's sound. We treat these as genuinely different jobs, not a one-size-fits-all "we do gutters" answer.

Overflow is a sizing problem as often as it's a blockage problem.

Not every overflowing gutter is blocked. On older homes, the gutter and downpipe were often sized for the roof and rainfall expectations of decades ago — smaller than what modern building standards would specify today. A gutter that's clear but still overflowing in heavy rain is frequently just undersized for the amount of roof it's draining, and no amount of cleaning fixes that.

Downpipe disconnection is the quiet one.

A downpipe that's cracked or come loose at a joint doesn't always announce itself — water can be discharging into the wall cavity or against the foundation for a long time before it shows up as damp inside the house. It's one of the easiest things to check and one of the most commonly missed.

Gutter Repairs Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to replace my old cast iron gutters with uPVC?
Not necessarily. Cast iron in reasonable condition can be repaired and repainted rather than replaced, and on period properties it's often worth keeping for how it looks. We'll tell you honestly which makes more sense for your house.

How often should gutters actually be cleaned?
Roughly twice a year as a baseline — spring and autumn — more often if you've got mature trees nearby, which is common across a lot of Dublin's older, leafier suburbs.

My gutters look fine from the ground — do I still need them checked?
Worth doing periodically, yes. A lot of the damage — rust starting on cast iron, joints beginning to fail, brackets loosening — isn't visible from ground level until it's already a bigger problem.

Can a blocked gutter really damage my house?
Yes, and it's one of the more common causes of damp we see. Water running down a wall instead of into a downpipe works into render and brickwork over time, and eventually into the wall itself.

Is gutter work covered by your guarantee?
Yes — every gutter and downpipe repair or replacement we carry out is backed by our 25-year written guarantee.
